The region of Patagonia, located in the Argentine south, comprises a series of mountains, glaciers and tundra that form many National Parks. While it has good infrastructure for tourism, its locations – such as the ever popular Perito Moreno Glacier – keep crowds at bay. As such we were privileged to shoot with South Korean firm 2i Digital, who specialize in 3D and state of the art audiovisual technology. Their mission: obtain time lapse footage for LG – Life is Good‘s new 180-degree HD TV unveiled at Consumer Electronics Show 2014.
San Telmo Productions was hired to serve as local production company for the duration of the project, with less than a week of pre-production time to get shooting permits for all the coveted National Parks – the Perito Moreno Glacier, Mount Fitz Roy and the Chilean Paine Towers, all of which have views as beautiful as their weather is extreme. It’s hard enough getting film clearance for these places, let alone on such short notice and in two different countries at the same time.
With the aid of location scout Mariano – who has more than 20 years of experience shooting in Patagonia, as well as a valuable list of contacts – and a team of production assistants, all of the permits were obtained on time. The shot didn’t go without incident – rain and bad weather threatened to stop filming altogether – but thanks to Mariano and his extensive knowledge of local geography, the crew was able to carry out filming in the one valley in the Perito Moreno Glacier where the circling mountain range sheltered them from the rain.
The resulting footage, shot over the course of a few days, turned out gorgeously. Next time you see an LG HD display showcasing the passage of time over the snowy mountainside remember – we probably shot that. In fact, having shot in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Bolivia, LG finally chose to display our footage at the CES 2014 unveiling of the world’s first 105-inch Curved Ultra HD TV!
