It’s been no secret that Argentine crime thriller The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos in Spanish) would be getting a US remake after winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010. As of May 13th the cast and crew have been finally revealed: the remake will star Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofior and Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow in the roles previously interpreted by Ricardo Darín and Soledad Villamil, while the movie will be directed by The Hunger Games (2012) and Captain Phillips (2013) screenwriter Billy Ray.
Joining Billy Ray as producers are Breaking Bad’s Mark Johnson and John Ufland. Juan José Campanella, who wrote and directed the original 2009 film, will act as executive producer. The adaptation will take place in Boston, MA, far away from the Argentine Dirty War historical context. Ejiofior will star as an MI-5 agent returning to Boston to pick up a murderous cold case that has haunted his life for years.
IM Global negotiated the deals with Ejiofior and Paltrow, and is slated to launch international sales at Cannes. Ejiofior’s role had previously been rumored to be going to Denzel Washington.
