Variety reported November 8th that Michael Radford’s new movie Elsa & Fred starring Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine is finished and up for grabs at the American Film Market. Lotus Entertainment had already pre-sold the film to Australia, Israel and Portugal, and has been more recently sold in the Latin American territory.
The movie is a remake of Marco Carnevale’s 2005 Elsa y Fred, an Argentine-Spanish co-production starring Argentine China Zorrilla and Spanish Manuel Alexandre as a pair of aged, widowed neighbors who bond over Federico Fellini’s La dolce Vita (1960). Both romcoms were partly shot on location in Rome, where the famed Fontana di Trevi plays a major part in the story. The movie is being scheduled for release sometime in 2014.
The rights to the remakes of several Argentine hit movies have been balling around for quite a while now in Hollywood. So far the list includes Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos, 2009) and three box office comedy hits starring Adrián Suar: A Boyfriend for my Wife (Un novio para mi mujer, 2008), Just Like Me (Igualita a mí, 2010) and Two Plus Two (Dos más dos, 2012).
